The Naval Cadets of HMS Britannia - May 1895

It is in the Britannia training establishment at Dartmouth that our Lieutenants, Commanders, Captains and Admirals receive their first training as naval cadets, entering at from 13 to 14 years of age by nomination and competitive examination.  The Britannia course of study covers two years, and the cadets then pass out into the naval service to become midshipmen, according to classification for study and conduct.  The happy accident, that the first ship allotted to the cadet training service was the old Britannia of the Russian war, gave the institution its name, and none could be more appropriate.

Britannia's Embryo Bluejackets.

This picture of the boys assembled on the quarterdeck, and clustering at every available spot, to sit, or stand, or hang on, for their portraits, is a striking one, and affords evidence of the care which is bestowed upon them in the course of their naval training.  Although the instruction of a modern seaman is very different to that which obtained fifty years ago, the regularity of routine and plenty of open-air work is still the same, and very healthy conditions prevail.  The boys under training in these old hulks have now been transferred to more healthy settlements on shore, to which technical warships are attached.

HMS Implacable - Devonport

HMS Lion and HMS Implacable, c.1896.

The Lion and Implacable belong to the Devonport training establishment for the conversion of naval recruits into bluejackets.  They lie moored together in the Hamoze off Torpoint, half way between the entrance to the waterway and Saltash Bridge, stern to stern and connected by light gangways which make the whole one big floating establishment.  The Lion is the ship shown here, with all her masts and spars, which have been left in her for use in drill aloft.  She belongs to the later era of wooden ships, having been built in the 1840s, when our naval architects of the old school had reached their best efforts with the result that few finer men-of-war were ever afloat than the majestic vessel which bears the essentially British name of Lion.  She has filled her present role as a boy's training ship for a quarter of a century since 1871, when she was added to the establishment in the Hamoze, then carried on in the Implacable.  Of the Lion's mate, the Implacable, there is yet more to tell.  She is a vessel with a history of her own, being, as a fact, the only existing man-of-war, except the Victory, that fought at Trafalgar.  She was originally a French ship, known as the Duguay Trouin, launched at Rochefort in 1800.  After various adventures, including several running fights with various British men-of-war at sea, in which the Duguay-Trouin escaped capture, she joined the French fleet before Trafalgar, and took part in the great battle.  She was one of the few French ships that escaped after it, only, however, to be taken a few days after the battle by a British squadron.  Renamed the Implacable, and added to the British fleet, she did good service for many years, among other things capturing a Russian man-of-war, the Sewolod, in 1808, down to some time after Queen Victoria came to the throne.  The Implacable has been a training ship since 1855.

Esquimalt

Esquimalt, near Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, was the major Royal naval base on the west coast of Canada.  A naval base was established  in 1848, and  in 1861 Esquimalt became the headquarters of the British pacific Station. Around 1885 a dry dock was constructed so that repairs could be carried out on ships up to small Cruisers.  the Royal navy pulled out of Esquimalt in 1905, (along with their other Canadian base at Halifax).  The Royal Canadian Navy  started in 1910 soon took over the Control of the the naval base in 1910.

Wei Hai Wei

British Fleet leaving Wei Hai Wei, 16th September 1911.

Five destroyers on left are HMS Whiting, HMS Janus, HMS Otter, HMS Virago and probably HMS Fame.   Whiting, Janus and Otter have three funnels, so are the 1st, 4th and 5th ships from the left, although exactly which is which is unknown.  The second destroyer from the left has two funnels and so is probably HMS Fame.  The only other China Station destroyers to have two funnels were HMS  Handy, HMS Hart and HMS Taku.  While Taku was larger than the destroyer here, the other two, Hand and Hart were probably mostly together, suggesting this is HMS Fame.  The 4-funneled destroyer 3rd from the left is HMS Virago - the only other four funneled destroyer on the China station was HMS Sparrowhawk, sunk years prior to this photograph.

On the right are three cruisers; again from left to right, HMS Newcastle, HMS Minotaur and HMS Kent.

Naval Shipbuilders of the World

From the Age of Sail to the Present day.  by Robert J Winklareth.

While the design and service histories of warships are well covered in print, until now there has been no single-volume guide to the companies and state yards which built them.  This encyclopaedic new work fills that gap, with concise 'biographies' of the shipbuilders, describing their corporate development, highlights in their histories, and listing the major ships they built.  International in coverage, the book is  divided by country, by region and by yard, and is illustrated throughout with maps and plans showing the locations of the builders and the ground layout of the most important shipyards at significant dates in their history.  The book also includes details of naval bases and repair facilities, while a general introduction points out the salient features of warship development over three centuries, from wood and canvas to the technology of steam, steel and electronics in order to explain the changes in the world's shipbuilding industries.  this comprehensive guide has a place on the bookshelf of any naval historian or enthusiast.

Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy, Compiled by Lt. Cdr. B. Warlow, R.N.

Shore Establishments of the Royal Navy is a comprehensive summary of all the named shore establishments and static ships of the Royal Navy from the beginning of the 19th Century.  The aim of the book is to fill a significant gap that existed in reference works.  To do this has meant compiling over 300 entries, and including the location of the establishment, its task and dates when it operated.  Some existed for a few days, and others were planned but never commissioned.  These latter have been included for completeness.  Because the Royal Navy established bases abroad, the shore establishments of the New and Old Commonwealth Navies have been included to clarify their position.  Similarly Commonwealth (and Allied, Free French etc), establishments set up in Great Britain in World War Two have also been included. Nominal Depot Ships, a device required by the Naval Discipline Act, and which led to some shore establishments being 'sunk', have also been included.  Many establishments changed their names, others their task, and others their location.  Such details can be found here.  At the end of the book is a gazzetteer, so that readers can find which establishments were located at a particular place.  The opportunity has been taken to incorporate unnamed Royal Naval Air Stations of World War One and other unnamed establishments into the gazzetteer.  All this is tabulated into this gem of a book, which is a must for any serious researcher.  This second edition has been completely rewritten to take the opportunity to include extra detail discovered during further researches and includes a further 400 names.

This volume continues a major series of books featuring the activities of the Royal Navy at its various bases, both at home and abroad throughout the last century.
